History
The Bulawayo Agricultural Show began in May 1899 near the Agricultural Hall in Bulawayo. Organized initially by the Rhodesian Land Owners and Farmers Association, it was later managed by the Bulawayo Agricultural Society (BAS). The early shows featured agricultural displays and competitions, marking the start of a long-standing tradition in the region.
Over the years, the Show grew and evolved, adapting to various challenges and changes, including disease outbreaks and global events. It expanded its scope to include commercial and industrial sectors, leading to name changes and the development of iconic structures like the Fairspire. These changes reflected the Show’s increasing importance as a regional trade and exhibition hub.
In 1986, financial pressures led to a separation between the BAS and its Trade Fair operations, resulting in the formation of the ZITF Company. Despite this split, the Bulawayo Agricultural Society continued its mission to promote agriculture and related industries. With a rich history spanning over a century, the Society remains a significant institution, poised to adapt to future developments.
